Model 1898 Infantry tunic with dark blue canvas standing collar, shoulder
straps, breast pocket flaps and pointed cuffs. This tunic has been
attributed by oral tradition to Pvt. G. J. Pettys of Company "F", 1st.
Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. Tunic has nickel letters spelling the
state abbreviation "CONN" on the left side of the collar. It appears that
there were once three similar devices on the right collar, presumably
"1ST", but these are now lacking. Has Connecticut state seal staff buttons
on the front closure and shoulder straps. The pocket flaps are closed with
eagle buttons. The rear pleat has been unstitched to allow the size to be
enlarged. This does not show as displayed and can be very easily restored
(I would if I were keeping this uniform for my collection, but I will
leave that up to the buyer). Two belt loops are present on the rear waist
but the belt is lacking. The interior is unlined and not marked. Garment
shows some fading and soiling for service, there are not holes or tears.
Also included is a printed muster roll for Company "F" dated "August 14th.
1898" with a full roster of the unit, including Pvt. Pettys' name, and
several hand written annotations referring the the company as the
"Hartford City Guard" and mustering in dates for both the Civil War and
Spanish American War. Document is held in a 10" x 8" metal frame that
dates from the 1950s or 60s. Nice group with good research possibilities.
Fair to good condition. S&H-$10.00
